Retreat FAQS
What level of surfer are these retreats designed for?
Most SurfLab retreats are designed for line 2 surfers and above who are comfortable catching unbroken waves and paddling out the back. Some locations are better suited to certain levels depending on the wave type, reef or sand banks. If you’re unsure whether a retreat is the right fit, our team can help guide you to the best option based on your experience and goals.
What’s included in the retreat package?
Each retreat includes accommodation, meals, daily surf coaching, video analysis, and guided surf sessions designed to help you progress faster in a consistent wave environment. Flights are excluded from the package. Inclusions vary slightly by location, so check the specific retreat page for full details.
Do I need to bring my own surfboard?
We strongly recommend bringing your own surfboard, as there’ll be a lot to take in and practice throughout the trip. Using a board you’re already comfortable with will make it easier to apply what you learn.

How big are the retreat groups?
Our retreats are intentionally kept small to maximise coaching quality and water time. Group sizes vary depending on the destination, but typically range from 6-10 surfers, allowing for personalised feedback both in and out of the water.
What does a typical day look like?
Most days include two surf sessions, supported by coaching and video analysis, along with recovery or movement sessions such as mobility work or Surf Skate training. The exact schedule varies depending on surf conditions, tides, and swell, allowing us to surf the best waves available each day.
Can I come on a retreat by myself?
Absolutely. Many of our guests join retreats solo. The small group environment makes it easy to connect with other surfers, and most people leave with new surf buddies and lasting friendships.
Do I need to be super fit?
You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness will help you get the most out of the retreat. You’ll be surfing twice a day for a week straight, so try to get in as much paddle practice prior! If possible, we recommend joining one of our Gold Coast workshops before your retreat. This helps build the right foundations and confidence so you can fully enjoy the experience.
How do I book?
We require a 50% deposit payment within the first 7 days of booking. The rest of the balance is due 3 months prior to the trip.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is strongly recommended for all international retreats. We recommend choosing a policy that covers surf travel, medical emergencies, and trip cancellations.
I’m not sure which retreat is right for me. Can someone help?
Of course. Every destination offers something slightly different in terms of wave type, environment, and coaching focus. If you’re unsure which retreat is best for you, reach out to our team and we’ll help guide you to the option that best suits your experience level, progression goals, and travel preferences.
